Q&A WITH BRIDE MELISSA
Like many of our brides, Mel stumbled across us on Instagram, not even looking for a wedding stylist at the time. “I wish I had known earlier that people like George & Smee exist and they can take care of everything,” she says here, reflecting on her big day and advising other brides-to-be not to take on too much on their own.
Mel came to us knowing exactly what she wanted: burgundy tones, with pinks and a touch of orange. We felt an instant connection with her vision and loved working with Mel from the conception stage, right through to setting everything up on the day.
Here, she talks styling inspiration, memorable moments and what she would do differently.
Mel, which three words best describe you?
Careful/cautious, kind and honest.
Tell us about the venue you chose for your big day?
Josh and I are are in love with Bondi. We spend most weekends of the year around Bondi with our dog George. When it's hot we love swimming at Ben Buckler and taking happy snaps. Josh is in to photography. When it's cold we prefer to do the coastal walk and grab a coffee.
So when we got engaged, we immediately started looking at venues in Bondi. We started looking at restaurants and then I randomly came across the Blue Room in a Google search. I emailed them straight away and within a few days Josh and I were there looking at the venue.
When we walked in we immediately knew that this was the place we would get married.
The beautiful arch windows looking out onto Bondi Beach just took our breath away. We loved the brightness yet warmth of the room. The outdoor ceremony area was gorgeous and really sealed the deal for us, as we liked the idea of having the ceremony and reception in the one venue.
What vibe did you aim for?
We really wanted a social and intimate vibe, so we opted for a cocktail wedding. We wanted guests to mingle all throughout the night, drink and dance. I hired a DJ and saxophone player that I met at my sister’s wedding. I knew they would do an amazing job at setting the vibe for us and making sure guests were thoroughly enjoying themselves.
I really wanted the room to be styled in a particular way - I wanted votive candles and deep warm burgundy tones to set the perfect mood.
What made you choose George & Smee for your styling and florals?
I stumbled across George & Smee on Instagram by chance and it worked out really well as you guys had styled many events at the Blue Room so you know the space really well.
Searching through your profile I particularly liked your floral work and arrangements, and for me that was really important. I knew I was in safe hands .
The wedding ceremony arch was just incredible, guests are still talking about it, and Nina made me the most gorgeous bouquet, it was honestly to die for. The colour combination was incredible. At the very last minute I requested a flower headband, which just so happened to be the talk of the wedding. It was the perfect piece to complete the look.
The flowers in general were sensational. The colours, tones and styles were just perfect and so much more than I could have dreamed.
The seating areas for the cocktail reception were styled so beautifully, along with the candle votives, flower arrangements and vases scattered throughout the venue.
Tell us about the inspiration behind the styling?
Even though Josh and I are summer people, we chose a winter wedding as I knew the colours and over all look I wanted were more suited to a winter wedding. I wanted to wear a long sleeve lace dress, and burgundy, soft pinky and orange tones as a key stand out.
I guess I have always been a lace person and love the look of lace. I bought my dress from Grace Loves Lace a lot of the inspo came from their socials. I knew my dress would fit the above mentioned things perfectly. I knew I wanted to create a beautiful soft ambiance with lots of candles and deep coloured flowers.
What were your favourite details that George & Smee created?
Oh my gosh so, so many. The flowers were a stand out. The ceremony arch was just out of this world amazing, so full and luxurious with just the most beautiful colours. Everything matched perfectly, the button holes, my bouquet, my head piece. It was all stunning.
The flower arrangements on the welcome sign and the positioning of them was also a winner. The smaller details inside with the mini vases scattered across the cocktails were perfect. The rug we were standing on during the ceremony also created the perfect touch. It just all came together so well.
What was the most memorable moment of the day?
Hmmm obviously becoming a Mrs! But also being surrounded by our best friends and family. Everyone who celebrated with us each have a special role in our lives so it was very intimate and there was lots of love in the room.
What do you wish you knew before you started planning?
I tried to do too much myself. My mum, friend and I were planning to do all the styling (so silly of me to even think we could). I wish I had known earlier people like George & Smee exist and that they can take care of everything from the ceremony to the reception. The service was just amazing! It really look the pressure off me.
Do you have any (other) words of advice for brides-to-be?
Work with people that you feel confident with and trust. That's so important. Trust your instincts and know what you want so your vision can come to life the way you have it planned in your mind.
